Do I need a permit to build a shed?: The size and height of the shed will determine whether or not a permit is required. 1. Do I need a permit to build a fence?: No, you do not need a permit to build a fence. Fences can be no taller than four feet if constructed within a front yard and no taller than six feet if constructed within a side or rear yard. The front yard is the area located between the front of a house and the front property line. The side yards are located along the side of a house behind the front façade of the house and the rear yard is located between the rear property line and back side of the house.
